The short answer

Kraft Azalea Garden (1365 Alabama Dr, Winter Park) is free and open 8 a.m. to dusk. Propose at the Exedra — the white columned monument on Lake Maitland — about 20 minutes before sunset, ideally on a weekday. For setups, check Winter Park’s park rules first.

If there’s one place in Central Florida that looks like it was built for proposals, it’s Kraft Azalea Garden. It’s the spot I’m asked about most, and one I know well. Here’s how to plan it well.

Why couples choose it

The garden sits on the shore of Lake Maitland, under tall cypress and oak trees hung with Spanish moss. At the water’s edge stands the Exedra, a white, columned monument inscribed “Pause friend, let beauty refresh the spirit” — it gives the whole place a storybook feel. It’s the classic proposal spot: open lake behind, columns framing you, soft light through the trees.

In late winter and early spring, the azaleas the garden is named for bloom in pinks and whites along the paths — a bonus if your date falls then.

When to go

Evening, always. The garden opens at 8 a.m., after sunrise all year, so this is a golden-hour spot. Plan to propose about 20 minutes before sunset (see our golden hour table). Weekday evenings are quietest; weekends can bring other photo sessions and small ceremonies at the Exedra, so we plan a timing window rather than an exact minute.

The walk-up route

The walk matters as much as the spot. The route we use most:

  1. Start at the entrance and set a relaxed, ordinary pace.
  2. Walk under the big oaks along the lake — it builds anticipation and gives me candid “before” frames.
  3. Arrive at the Exedra and turn your partner toward the lake.
  4. Give the signal — a word, a shoulder tap — and drop to one knee.

This is the exact plan we used for Andrew’s proposal — read the full story.

Where I hide

The trees do most of the work. I work from 50–100 feet away with a long lens, blending in as someone photographing the lake. Your partner shouldn’t notice me until you’re on one knee — then I come in closer for portraits with the ring.

Setups at Kraft Azalea

A petals-and-candles setup at the Exedra is stunning, but it’s a public park in the City of Winter Park, which regulates events and décor in its parks. Before we plan any setup here, we confirm current rules with Winter Park Parks & Recreation (407-599-3334). Expect LED candles rather than open flame, and everything cleared the moment you’re done. If the rules don’t fit your vision, a setup package works beautifully at a private venue or at home.

Practical tips

  • Parking is very limited along Alabama Drive — leave a few extra minutes, or have a friend drop you off.
  • Mosquitoes come out near the water at dusk in summer. Bring repellent and keep it in the car.
  • Outfits: the garden is mostly green and white, so a color — red, blush, cobalt — pops beautifully.
  • Backup spot: if it’s busy or raining, Winter Park’s Central Park on Park Avenue and Mead Botanical Garden are a short drive away.
